Batman - 2007-08-20 08:20:25 As you may have noticed, I have not done much with our blog this summer but I hope to get back on track soon.
The purpose of this blog today is to say a few words about our beloved cat, Batman. For those of you who have kept up with Linda and me and our cats in our newsletters, you know we often wrote about our old diabetic but beautiful gray cat, Batman. Batman adored Linda and all 17 pounds of him could often be found on her lap. He was a sweet old guy, and we loved him. Sadly, a couple of weeks ago, he became sick. He refused his food and became lethargic. At first, we thought he was having trouble with his insulin but when we took him to the vet and had x-rays and a sonogram taken, we discovered he had a tumor on his spleen that was impacting his liver. Before we got him, Batman was a feral cat, meaning he lived outdoors by himself for quite a few years. During that time, he contracted FIV (probably through a puncture wound from an infected cat). FIV is the cat version of HIV which ultimately turns deadly. The FIV virus probably caused the tumor and other ills in Batman. All too soon, his skin had turned yellow, indicating the liver was not functioning and he quickly went downhill. On Sunday, August 12, Batman left us. Now, the house seems a bit empty without him and we have quietly mourned. Our sadness is tempered only by the years of joy he gave us. If you have a pet, spend a little extra time with him or her if you can in memory of Batman.
Play with the angels, old boy. You will not be forgotten. And thank you for sharing your life with us. We could have used a few more years, though.
