Dear Gentle and Prodigious Readers:
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and Delightful Holidays to all our friends from me, Linda, the cats, and the raccoons and possums in the yard, too!
Our newsletter is necessarily brief this time. So much to do! Right now, we're busily decorating the house so China can play with the beads and baubles she thinks are her toys.

During this time of joyful family gatherings, let us not forget the magnificent young men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan and around the world who stand watch for us on the frontiers of freedom. I hear often from them, and when I do, I ship them books. I recall when I was in Vietnam, I was reduced to reading the labels on aspirin bottles! I know first-hand how wonderful it is in a combat zone to escape, if just for a little while, through a book.
Books are a great gift to our service men and women wherever they're stationed, but especially overseas. It's a bit of a hassle to do it. You'll have to fill out a customs form at the post office, but the satisfaction you'll receive for the effort will be huge and, believe me, the recipients will be so appreciative.
There are organizations out there, such as http://www.anysoldier.com, which support our service people by helping citizens to send them gifts. They do a magnificent job and I recommend them. But for a little more personal touch, you might try to find a soldier, sailor, airman, or Marine from your community or neighborhood who is out there for us, and surprise him or her with a favorite book, or some other personal gift. I think you'll feel the true holiday spirit if you do!
