Coalwood, WV - The Rocket Boys - Elise & Homer Hickam, Sr.
  Elsie, Homer's mother, went after her dream and moved full-time to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1975. Homer's father, Homer Hickam, Sr., continued to live in Coalwood and worked in the mines as a superintendent and consultant until he retired in 1982. He then joined Elsie in Myrtle Beach where they lived happily until he died in 1989 of complications due to black lung disease.
