"Welcome to Coalwood", a wonderful website by Steve Date about Coalwood
and Homer and the Rocket Boys.
YOUR WHOLE COMMUNITY CAN READ ROCKET BOYS/OCTOBER SKY TOGETHER! All you need to join the fun is here.
Many cities, large and small, are starting a "One Book, One City" reading program through their library, and many have choosen Rocket Boys/October Sky as their book to read together.
They are reporting back to us that it was their best read yet! A community read works like a giant book club, but with lots of additional related activities to enhance the experience and involve all ages in the whole community.
As an example, the Orange County Library System (Orlando, Florida) picked Rocket Boys/October Sky for their "One Book, One Community" initiative for fall 2002.
There were 14 schools, 2 universities and 12 libraries who participated in the group read - 19% of Florida! Homer and Linda visited for three days, signing books and giving talks.
Everything you need to plan and do that in your city is in the three files below and I have many many additional files to help available - from more discussion questions to Teacher's Guides.
The Web site has much to help already there too.
Please contact Mrs. Linda Hickam at LTHickam@homerhickam.com for more information!
